Illicitly Manufactured Fentanyl–Involved Overdose Deaths with Detected Xylazine — United States, January 2019–June 2022

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published a new report, Illicitly Manufactured Fentanyl-Involved Overdose Deaths with Detected Xylazine which highlights the presence of xylazine, a non-opioid tranquilizer not approved for human use, in illegally made fentanyl products. The report indicates that among 20 states and the District of Columbia from January 2019 to June 2022, the monthly percentage of IMF-involved deaths with xylazine increased 276% (from 2.9% to 10.9%).
