Pandemic-level flexibilities on MOUD in OTPs permanent
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) released a final rule which makes the flexible use of medications to treat opioid use disorder in Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs) permanent. Modifications include:
Take-home doses of methadone.
Treatment can be initiated through telehealth. Buprenorphine can be prescribed via audio-only telehealth. Methadone requires audio and visual connection with a provider.
Per state law, nurse practitioners and physician assistants can order medications for opioid use disorder in OTPs.
Access to interim treatment is expanded, allowing patients to initiate medication for opioid use disorder while awaiting further treatment.
