Adolescents’ Use of Free Time and Associations with Substance Use from 1991 to 2019

Uncovering links between complex patterns of time use and substance use outcomes could reveal new opportunities for intervention and education of adolescents surrounding substances, helping to promote declines in use. This study examines patterns of how adolescents spend their time to illuminate the extent to which unsupervised or unstructured social time with peers and other activities may be linked with shifting trends in substance use.
